  • Essay / Abortion Laws: Legalized Abortion - 681

Abortion laws have changed over the years. Many people debate abortion, putting its legal status in a bind. Initially, in the 1800s, the idea of abortion was absurd and illegal. Supporters of abortion are known as "pro-choice" and believe that women have the right to decide whether or not to terminate their pregnancies. Americans will have a better future if they support the legalization of abortion. The legalization of abortion appears to be the reason why crime rates have dropped by 50 percent in the states. Crime rates began to decline a few years after abortion was legalized in 1970. The few states that legalized abortion were the first to experience falling crime rates before the rest of the world. States that had higher abortion rates in the 1980s had lower crime rates in the 1990s (Donohue & Levitt, Doc 2). If abortion is not legalized, doctors fear that pregnant women who do not want their babies will resort to illegal and dangerous abortions or simply kill their babies themselves after birth (AbortionProCon, Doc 5 ). This will endanger both the baby and the woman. Some prominent leaders support legal abortion. For example, the President of the United States, Barack Obama. President Obama is pro-abortion and pro-choice. Sixty days after his inauguration, he expressed his views on abortion. Even if Obama supports it, federal funds will not finance abortion. It says states will use their own funds through their Medicaid programs to fund abortions (Annas, Doc 6). Some states like North Dakota do not cover abortion services except in cases of rape, incest, or to protect the life of the mother (Pickert, Doc 10). Obama... middle of paper ...
