There is much courtroom controversy over whether or not intelligent design should be taught alongside evolution in public schools, which has been going on for many years. . Intelligent design is the idea that changes in nature cannot be a random process, but some type of guidance must have led to why nature is the way it is in the current era. In most cases, that specific direction is God. God created the world for a specific purpose. Creationism is the same idea as intelligent design, believing that nature was created by a divine being, God. Evolution is the idea of natural selection. This idea means that specific traits in genes were chosen to last longer over generations having the ability to breed on those traits. Having these particular types of genes allows a specific living organism to survive longer and adapt well to its environment. Intelligent design and/or creationism are different from evolution, which is why these two ideas should not be taught simultaneously. Ideas should not be taught alongside each other because it violates the First Amendment, the Establishment Clause of the Constitution, it may interfere with students' prior scientific knowledge using corroboration, and topics related to religion should not be introduced into science classes, especially if it is not scientifically proven. For starters, intelligent design should not be taught alongside evolution in public school classrooms because it shows a preference for religion. According to the First Amendment, it states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” (ushistory.org).
