Nowadays, people love high-tech computers, smart phones and all kinds of gadgets. But before people can enjoy it, someone has to create the program to operate the device. That's where computer engineers come in. The field itself is divided into many areas, including cybersecurity, networking, computer software, and computer hardware. They have the difficult task of designing the body and mind of the computer. Computer engineering is an ever-evolving field that makes computers smaller, faster, and more efficient, creating a high-tech environment for society. Computer engineering is a relatively new career compared to other professions. Computer engineering began in the mid-20th century. “Case Western Reserve University's computer engineering program was the nation's first accredited program in 1971” (History). With this accredited program, the career of a computer engineer has gained momentum. People could now learn the basics of computer engineering in college. As more and more technologies appeared, computer engineering was booming. In the 21st century, computer engineering has become a broad field. In 2004, there were approximately 170 ABET-accredited computer engineering programs in the United States. Computer engineering can be found in all kinds of industries that involve everything related to technology. Top industries that hire computer engineers include computer industry, telecommunications, energy and power, aerospace, biomedical, manufacturing, transportation, and automotive. Each of these industries branches out into many different sectors, so computer engineers can be found almost anywhere. There are many things that define computer engineers and their careers.
