Essay / Nectanebo II's Horus statue and the human-headed winged lion, also known as Lamassu, are two very different but similar works of art. with each other in composition, representation, function and style. Although they were created at two different times in history, the artists thought about and created both works of art in the same way. The work of art of the Egyptian period is a statue depicting the god of war, the sun and rulers, Horus. It was created between three hundred and sixty and three hundred and forty-two BC. It is titled The Horus Statue of Nectanebo II because the god Horus is seen protecting one of the kings, also known as pharaohs, of Egypt, Nectanebo II. Another similar work of art, a large statue titled The Winged Lion with a Human Head, came from the Assyrian period. It was found in Mesopotamia, now Nimrud, Iraq. It was created between eight hundred and eighty-three and eight hundred and fifty-nine BC. Likewise, it was created for King Ashurnasirpal II and was placed at the entrance to his palace. A commonality between each work of art is that the artists who created them are unknown. The statue and the lamassu are similar in nature as they are both sculptures carved with animals. The Lamassu is a creature wearing the hat of a god with the body of a lion, the head of a human and the wings of an eagle. The title of this artwork is appropriate as it gives the viewer an idea of the composition of the creature. The animal parts represent different things like the body of the lion representing strength and protection. Wings were also symbols of strength as the eagle was an animal considered to have power like the lion.
