  • Essay / Self-Deception in Engineering Ethics - 1504

IntroductionPeople intuitively have a desire to get things done the way they want even when they find themselves in a very difficult situation that requires doing something or believe in something that might be beyond their control. They tend to have an overly favorable view of their abilities, such that they support their opinions to the point of self-deception. They allow themselves to believe that a false feeling, idea, or situation is true simply so they can achieve a certain goal they have in mind. This article aims to define self-deception and how it differs from lying, in addition to finding the relationship between self-deception and ethics through concrete examples. What is self-deception? Many studies have found different interpretations of the definition of self-deception. . Nonetheless, most study results indicate that self-deception could be defined as "the acquisition and maintenance of a belief (or, at least, the avowal of that belief) in the face of strong evidence to the contrary." , motivated by desires. or emotions favoring the acquisition and maintenance of this belief” (Deweese-Boyd, 2012). In other words, self-deceiving people deceive themselves into thinking or accepting certain circumstances that are invalid in order to achieve a certain goal or avoid an undesired outcome. They generally rely on unconscious motivations, intentions and emotions that play an important role in the process of self-deception. For a person to be considered self-deceiving, they must have contradictory beliefs and intentionally force themselves to believe that they truly know they are false. Self-deceptionAccording to Paul Ekman (1997), lies can be distinguished from others...... middle of paper ......e to achieve a certain goal. As a result, some argue that those who self-deceive should be held responsible for their actions and others believe that they should not be held responsible for what they do since they do it unintentionally. Either way, this is a serious matter that must be taken into consideration because it has a serious effect on everyone and not just the self-deception mentioned in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster that led upon the death of all its members.
