Essay / Pai Heroic Journey - 1024
Pai Heroic JourneyA hero is a person who can endure danger and is not afraid to take on challenges. In the film “Whale Rider,” a young girl with exactly these characteristics, Pai, changes everything within her Maori community. Her dedication to equality in her community and to bettering herself differs from how everyone else views women. The men of his community were considered superior. Pai was looked down upon due to her unfeminine attributes and her refusal to listen to her grandfather. Throughout Pai's journey, she always had a rocky relationship with her grandfather. Pai's childish characteristics threaten her grandfather's traditional beliefs and the Māori community, leading her to a series of events on her journey to heroism. Pai is considered a great heroine because of her baffling birth into the world, her transcendent gender, and the effects of following her instincts. For a typical hero in any story or movie, there is always something that stands out. Whether unexplained or unexpected, a mysterious event usually occurs that symbolizes a hero's personality and life. The entrance to the Pai world is shown and displayed in a single frame at the beginning of the film. Pai was born alongside her twin brother, who died mysteriously at birth. His grandfather, who desperately wanted a grandson, was disgusted and disliked Pai because of his gender. Pai's grandfather was unaware of Pai's gift and the trait it granted. Pai's miraculous survival at birth shows that she has a powerful personality who will never give up. In the film “Whale Rider,” Pai’s birth symbolizes the multiple consequences of who and what she will become. Pai living with her brother was a powerful symbol of her survival, which was sent in the middle of a paper to her husband, Pai's grandfather, stating that he was not in charge. It only took Pai's confidence to look beyond her gender and change her community's outlook for the better. Reflecting on the film, a scene where everyone has given up to save the whales, Pai follows his instincts and brings the whale back to shore. As everyone in the community sees this remarkable action, the Māori community quickly realizes that it is time for a change in tradition. Pai's characteristics and emotional drive led her to endure challenges that may have set her back. Throughout these complex events, she grew and matured as a person. By meeting these challenges, just like a hero, she gains confidence and inspiration to continue doing better. By saving the community from villains, she saves the community from its destroyable tradition..
