His father, Patrick, was a bank administrator while his mother Cherry was an artist. It could be said that Daldry followed in his mother's footsteps for the steps he took in the art industry. Stephen's father opposed his child's initial enthusiasm for acting, prompting him to leave school and work in a shirt factory to help increase the family's income. His family later moved to Taunton, Somerset, where his father died suddenly from a tumour. Stephen was only 14 when his father died. He started this in the mid-1980s, after graduating from the prestigious University of Sheffield. Stephen was a member of a youth theater group in Taunton. He was artistic director of the Royal Court Theater from 1992 to 1998, where he led the £26 million improvement project. He was also artistic director of the Gate Theater in London (1989-1992) and the Metro Theater Company (1984-1986). He now sits on the board of directors of the Young and Old Vic Theaters and remains associate director of the Royal Court Theatre.
