The story shows how beautiful and peaceful the landscape is at first, but then man comes in and corrupts the perfect landscape. This long, vast part of history that shows the beauty of nature ultimately foreshadows the destruction of the canyon when man enters the perfect canyon. The imagery sets up the conflict between man and nature. The simple fact that the prospector digs the earth in search of gold disturbs the tranquility of the canyon. “It [the canyon] was like starlight in the atmosphere, shot through and warmed by the sun, and bathed in flowers of sweetness.” A reading that can create a feeling that warms the reader's heart and creates an image of purity and perfection in the canyon. Calm described the canyon before the man entered it, and all was at peace. Then, as soon as man entered the beauty of the canyon, it caused an immediate disturbance when the prospector entered. “The impact of steel-shod soles against the rocks began to be heard, and the man’s voice grew louder.” The canyon and all its perfection are now tainted and are no longer calm and
