Essay / The Pros and Cons of the Justice System - 913
When it comes to search and seizure, sentencing, and arrest, there are many differences between the races. The data revealed that prison sentences for black men were nearly 20% longer than those for whites (NAACP), that they would commit the same crime, but receive a different sentence. In a recent case between Brock Turner and Corey Batey, they both committed the same time, under the same circumstances, but received two different convictions. Turner received little to no time, while Batey was sentenced to 15 years in prison (King). There should be no possibility of them serving different sentences even if they committed the same act. We can say that “a person” did something, but not about race or anything more specific than that. One night my friend and I were walking when the cops stopped and arrested us. They asked him a series of questions, jumped to many conclusions and searched him. After finally verifying his identity, they believed him. All the cops had to say was, "We received a call that a suspicious person with hair was walking around the neighborhood," nothing that matched his description.,
