Cyrus was the host of the 2015 VMAs and she did a racist performance using black culture, a popular and trendy culture in America, to present herself as "wild and dangerous » using black people as “props” for slapping and twerking (Makarechi 2013). Therefore, Manji turned her acceptance speech towards Cyrus by calling her out on her liberal discussion about her in the media a few days earlier. Cyrus said Manji should blame herself for not being nominated for best music video of the year alongside Taylor Swift and other artists (Feeney 2015). Manji pointed out how the entertainment industry singled out white artists to win awards and ignored non-white artists, even though their music was also very popular and deserved to receive awards as well. Additionally, Manji pointed out that if Cyrus wanted to appreciate black culture, she should also care about the black people who created that culture. Cyrus, on the other hand, refused to give an answer (Feeney 2015).
