  • Essay / Everyday Use Character Analysis - 1044

In Everyday Use, there are three main characters, Momma, Dee (Wangero), and Maggie. Mom is also the narrator. She is a very tough and strong woman because she has gone through difficult times. Maggie, perhaps she is the shyest, most ignorant and most beloved of a mother. The house fire incident left him with scars; therefore, she is afraid of the outside world and never spends a single moment without her mother. Maggie is also good at quilting. Dee, also known as Wangero, went abroad to study and still thinks Mom and Maggie are stereotypes. Throughout the story, Dee's behavior shows that she is not proud of her heritage and culture. The climax of the story occurs when Dee wanted to take her grandmother's handmade quilts because she thinks it is a work of art. “His mother, on the other hand, considers it as an object of daily use, imbued with personal and family value: this is where its meaning lies. So she decides to give the quilt to her other daughter who appreciates her family history and plans to use it on her bed..”
