  • Essay / Love in A Valediction Forbidding Mourning by HJohn Donne...

Some of the most analyzed aspects of emotion and life, by literary greats over the past few centuries, have been the question of death and the physical, spiritual aspects. , and emotional attachments that can be defined as love. Although authors of prose and poetry have long worked on these two specific areas of discussion, the depth and diversity of approaches can only be described in terms of the differential between the personalities and world of the author in question. Accordingly, the following analysis will focus on the discussion and analysis of the approach and understanding of love that two specific poets exhibit in their respective works. The first of these poets to be analyzed is John Donne in his poem “A Valediction Forbidding Mourning”. Likewise, the second one that will be analyzed is “To His Coy Mistress” by Andrew Marvell. Even though both of these were written around the same time, the key difference that will be analyzed is how the respective authors understand love and in a somewhat asymmetrical manner. As will be discussed in the preceding analysis, John Donne's view focuses on love existing outside the constraints of time, while Andrew Marvell's view focuses on immediacy, urgency and the physical necessity of love existing in this very moment. Through an analysis and discussion of these facts, this author hopes that the reader will gain a more informed understanding of how love has been understood in different ways by different authors; even at the same time. Firstly, regarding Andrew Marvell's poem, "To His Coy Mistress", the reader can quickly understand that middle of paper...... to Marvell's poem is founded entirely based on lust and the concept physicality of love, it would be fair to say that, compared to John Donne's: Marvell's is particularly more focused on the physical definition of love and the way in which the poet is able to engage with it. By comparison, the lack of immediacy evoked by John Donne helps evoke an understanding of a more spiritual definition of the love he shares for the woman described in the poem. Rather than stating which particular approach is most effective or analyzing the understanding or belief that love that exists outside of time is the highest and noblest approach, the difference that has been discussed and analyzed so far is useful in designating only the approach by which these two respective approaches are most effective. the authors took into account the subject matter.
