    The Old Testament serves as the foundation of God's teachings, while the New Testament continues to build and preserve God's principles. The Old Testament and the New Testament have a very unique relationship because they are complementary. The Old Testament contains many prophecies that are fulfilled in the New Testament. God can be seen as fearsome in the Old Testament, while God portrays a friendlier, more compassionate character in the New Testament. Although there are many differences between the two, there are also many similarities due to the strong influence that the writings of the Old Testament had on the books and passages of the New Testament. An example of similarity between the Old Testament and the New Testament can be examined between passages in the First Book of Samuel and the Gospel of Luke, located in the Old Testament and New Testament respectively. The First Book of Samuel, named after Samuel himself, is found in the Old Testament and is also part of the Deuteronomistic History. Many scholars believe that Samuel himself wrote this book, but the authorship is still relatively unknown. The first book of Samuel appears to have been written during the divided monarchy but before the fall of the Northern Kingdom. The book tells the stories of Samuel, Saul and David. The first part of the book describes the birth and history of Saul. The second part describes the relationship between Samuel and Saul. Finally, the third part describes the relationship between Saul and David. Samuel, a prophet anointed to speak the word of God to the nation, represents one way of governing. God acts through the words of the prophet to remind the people of Israel to be faithful to the terms of the Covenant. For example, Hannah calls God “LORD,” while Mary calls God “Him.” Hannah refers to God as a “ROCK,” because a rock is firm and strong. Mary mentions God as the “Mighty One”. To conclude, the Old Testament and the New Testament are very similar in many ways. The New Testament had fulfilled what the Old Testament had prophesied. Many New Testament books were influenced by Old Testament books. The first book of Samuel and the Gospel of Luke are excellent examples of the similarity between the Old Testament and the New Testament. The dialogues of Hannah in 1 Samuel 2:1-11 and Mary in Luke 1:46-56 share similar diction and recurring themes. Both women express their joy and praise to God for all the wonderful things He has done for them..
