Over time, labels of failure come both from the institutions that perpetuate these gender ideals, as well as from an identity formed based on the failure of individuals who experience it. The current structure of education is riddled with assumptions of difference, both biological and perceptual, and is not designed for the education of boys. It is evident that this model of masculinity encourages identification because… In the United States, children spend approximately 1,100 hours per year in the classroom, over the course of their lives, which represents a year and a half of their lives. With the trends mentioned above, boys are forced into a small box of expectations. Whatever expectations there are, they are very weak and are entirely focused on strict adherence to a polarized gender ideal; they add all the features that come with it. The drive for identification is not as obvious as telling a child to “be a man,” but it creates, over time, a sense of self-actualization.
