    IntroductionIn recent years, due to the impact on society created by recent business collapses and, more recently, by the economic crisis Currently, the concept of corporate governance has become central in the economic, academic and institutional debate. At the heart of this debate is the attempt to rethink and shape the business system and mechanisms in such a way as to “instill in businesses the vision, processes and structures essential for making decisions that guarantee a long term sustainability”. This mandate is valid not only for economic actors but also for the public sector whose role is to create public value, by developing reasonable policies while meeting the needs of various stakeholders and responding to the growing demand for accountability, fairness and transparency. This article focuses on analyzing the governance failures of one of the most innovative and promising UK government information technology projects: FiReControl. Launched in 2004, FiReControl was supposed to be the future of fire and rescue services. Instead, after 7 years, it was canceled and labeled “one of the worst cases of project failure” in British government history. It is argued that the failure of the project was of two types (1) ineffective engagement of key stakeholders and (2) Lack of leadership and management skills. The idea is that a lack of engagement from key stakeholders, in the specific context of FiReControl, negatively impacted the overall project performance and worsened an already weak leadership model.
