A drug to treat a type of mental retardation has shown promise. I chose this text in particular because it relates to my novel "Flowers for Algernon". Part B: In the novel Flowers for Algernon, Charlie is the speaking character in the text. The two scientists, Professor Nemur and Dr. Strauss who performed the experimental operation on him to enhance his intelligence, told Charlie, a mentally retarded thirty-two year old, that he would have to write a progress report every day to see how Charlie is doing. adapting to the “new Charlie” and the way he develops and progresses. This ties in a bit with my novel, a journey because Charlie and Forest Gump both have a low IQ level but one continues his life naturally without any operation while Charlie had an experimental operation to increase his IQ and intelligence..
