Essay / The effects of technology on children and children
Young children at the table, in the park, at the mall are constantly seen playing with their caregiver's phones, iPads or iPods, generally not interacting with the world around them. In today's society, this is completely normal because we have created a world based on the constant need for technology. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends eliminating technology use for young children under two years of age and minimizing technology use for children two years and older (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2015). By minimizing screen time, children will be able to develop positively socially and emotionally. Many theorists have spent years focusing on children's development and the aspects that shape their social behavior. Jean Piaget believed that children's minds developed in stages, while Lev Vygotsky theorized that children developed socioculturally. Both theories allow current researchers and psychologists to see the negative effects of technology. Research studies such as the Friendship Quality Study and the Secure Attachment Studies confirm how screen time can affect a child's development through many different aspects. The use of electronics should be significantly reduced in order to create a lifestyle in which a child can grow, interact and learn skills that will last a lifetime. One of the most famous psychologists who studied child development was Jean Piaget. He divided child development into four stages: the sensorimotor stage, the preoperational reasoning stage, the concrete operational reasoning stage, and the formal operational reasoning stage (Callanan, lecture, October 22, 2015). Each stage is extremely important in life, especially the sensorimotor and pre...... middle of paper ...... They do not have the opportunity to interact with others and see the world as older generations did it. Now, this is not said for all electronic devices, it often involves the culture and atmosphere in which the child grows up. The great psychologist and theorist Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky explained how extremely important the first years of a child's life are. and essential for good development. Studies such as Stranger Situation and Friendship Quality allow us to see that as human beings, we need human interaction and that we need to connect with others to succeed in life. Children need to be able to learn basic skills such as holding a conversation or being kind to another human being, which simply cannot be done if the child is staring at a screen all day. The AAP has a healthy perspective on technology recommendations and should be recommended to all parents everywhere..
