Essay / Robinson Crusoe - 408
Robinson CrusoeThe book Robinson Crusoe is the adventure story of a man who finds himself trapped on a desolate island. Crusoe must survive in the most difficult conditions and try to keep his sanity intact. Throughout the book, Crusoe continually questions his own faith in God, but never gives up hope for the best. The book begins with a man who dreams of conquering the seas, but is told he can never achieve that goal. Crusoe finally finds himself in trouble when he becomes a captive on a ship. However, he defies all odds and escapes from captivity. He later attempts to build a sugar plantation in Brazil and travels to Africa to find slaves for his plantation. On his way to Africa, Crusoe becomes the only survivor of a shipwreck and washes up on the shore. He accepts the fact that he might stay there for a while, builds himself a house and tries to stay alive in this strange land. Although he never loses sight of his goal, which is to leave the island, he questions his faith in God. However, Crusoe does not completely lose his faith, as at one point in the novel he becomes very ill and begins reading the Bible day and night. Although at other times he searches his soul for many questions; “Why did God put me on this island?” or “What will happen next?” Crusoe kept track of his life by writing in his journal, his only companion until he encountered signs of life. There is only one problem; these men are cannibals. Some of them are held captive and thank Crusoe for saving them. The men decide to build themselves a makeshift raft. This comes in handy for castaways when they spot a ship off the coast. Turns out it's a mutinous ship. Crusoe and his companions fight against the rebellious crew members and defeat them. To show his gratitude, the ship's captain agrees to take them home. After fifteen years of vacation far from civilization, Crusoe returns and finds a pleasant surprise. It turns out that his cash crops have earned him a small fortune and he soon marries. During the rest of his life, Crusoe gathers the strength to undertake a final journey to the islands where he once dwelt. This is a book, not just about survival of the fittest, but about humanity and faith..
