  • Essay / Conformity and rebellion in Antigone - 785

Would you prefer not to have conflicts in your life? Antigone is a play based on conflicts between characters. Antigone is the sister of Polyneices, deceased. Polyneices is considered a traitor to Creon and he does not bury those who are against him. As conflicts arise, Antigone, Creon, and the Chorus argue over whether or not to bury Polyneices. Conflict is an integral part of life because of the changes we face. It is appropriate to rebel and create conflict when we believe in doing the right thing, but someone takes away the necessary tool and we cannot achieve those goals. It is also appropriate to comply when violence gets out of control. The changes that occur make us, the readers, better individuals and once conflicts are resolved, we will not repeat the same mistakes and compliance will then be possible. It is appropriate to rebel and create conflict when you believe in doing the right thing. but someone is taking away the tool you need to do it. The play's main conflict between Antigone and Creon is the best example of this argument. Antigone believes that everyone deserves a proper burial. According to her, even if someone is a traitor or doesn't like Creon's opinions, they deserve a proper burial. In this case, Creon decides that Polynices does not deserve a proper burial because Polynices is a traitor to him. Antigone now wants to bury Polynices and does not care about Creon's edict. However, Ismene warns Antigone: “But think of the danger! Think about what Creon will do! (469). Ismene tells Antigone that she is afraid of burying Polyneices behind Creon's back, because if they are caught, they will be heavily punished. Ismene and everyone in Thebes are afraid of Cr...... middle of paper ...... and how we can be better individuals from the initial conflict. Choragos tells us that if we want to be happy, we must be intelligent. In Antigone, it is appropriate to comply when violence gets out of control. This happens when everyone close to Creon dies because of his stubbornness and pride. However, it is appropriate to rebel when we believe it is important to do the right thing, but someone takes away the necessary tool and we cannot achieve those goals. This happens in the room where Antigone wants to bury Polyneices, but Creon is too powerful and scares all the people of Thebes. We can learn from this play that conflict is necessary in our lives, because without it we cannot learn. Works Cited Sophocles. Antigone. Abcarian, Klotz and Cohen, eds.
