Essay / The United States and the political situation between Russia and Ukraine and Crimea (Dutton et al. pg1). I want to encourage all Americans to care not only about the situation in Ukraine and Crimea as it has unfolded, but also about how it is affecting America and the rest of the world financially and how this could threaten the security of other countries around the world. “Meanwhile, the United States remains the world's largest consumer and importer of oil. This year, the United States will import about 60 percent of the oil it consumes, and the U.S. Energy Information Administration expects foreign dependence to rise to about 70 percent in 2010.” (Victor p. 1) Like many other conflicts in recent history, the occupation of Crimea really boils down to debt and oil. Oil, natural gas and coal, to be more precise, account for two-fifths of Russian exports and are the world's largest producer of oil. Fossil fuels are an abundant source that Russia has traded for decades with its Eastern European neighbors and the rest of the world through Ukrainian naval ports. Russia has done this without regulation and its sources can be exploited without the constraint of production quotas, guarantees and other fair trade rules and standards, because Russia is not a member of OPEC. “Russian oil companies also made their first shipments to US markets in 2002 – part of which was purchased symbolically as part of the US government's efforts to increase its Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR). Additionally, four Russian oil companies are preparing a major new port in Murmansk to serve as a partner for those maintaining neutrality in times of moral crisis. » Work cited Dutton, Sarah.
