  • Essay / Eating Disorders and Women Essay - 1293

Women are more likely than men to be dissatisfied with their weight, and men tend to turn to binge eating ( overeating) and exercising too much to control and gain weight. Men who participate in sports like wrestling, dancing, and modeling tend to have a higher risk of suffering from an eating disorder. Based on a questionnaire administered by NEDA to 226 college students (98 men and 128 women) regarding weight, body shape, diet, and exercise history, the authors found that 26% of men and 48% of women described themselves as being overweight. . Women fasted to lose weight while men frequently exercised and indulged in binge drinking. Again, eating disorders occur at all ages, but for both women and men, "the peak risk for onset of binge eating disorder occurred at age 16, while the Maximum risk of onset of purging occurred at the age of 18” (Costin). Binge eating is more common in men and they binge either to gain weight, i.e. muscle, and if they want to lose weight they probably won't purge.
