Essay / The Great Fire of London - 1376
As once published on Funky, a breaking news blog, "The fire from London's heart spreads through the blood of its veins, making history from its ashes" (“Metaphor…” quote n°6). In 1666, the Great Fire of London destroyed everything and burned everything in its path and is remembered as one of Britain's most historic devastations. The September fire lasted about four days. There are a number of different reasons why this fire was so destructive, including lack of response, lack of building materials, and proximity to buildings. There are other reasons, but these three were the most important. There were also theories regarding the number 666. Many people believed that the number 666 was superstitious. A year before the fire, a man named Michel de Nostredame predicted that in 1666 there would be a great fire. Michel de Nostredame, or Nostradamus, was a Frenchman who lived in the 16th century. Some called him a “seer” because he studied astrology and different sciences to predict the future. When he predicted the great fire of London, he said: "The blood of the righteous will sin in London, burned by the lighting of twenty three six: the old lady will fall from her high place, several members of the same sect will be killed” (“Top 10…” n°9). The "six" in the quote refers to either the six documented deaths or the year of the fire. “The Old Lady” refers to London. Others have pointed to the writings of John the Evangelist to support the idea that the number six hundred and sixty-six identified a particular beast. In the Book of Revelation, John wrote of this number: “He also forced all men, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark in the middle of the paper…. .London bears witness to the determination and strength of a city and its people.
