An important argument in favor of capital punishment is the idea that the death penalty will deter people from committing crimes. According to the organization Oregonians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, or OADP, no scientific study has successfully concluded that the death penalty deters crime and that "states without the death penalty [in fact] have a lower murder rate lower than that of neighboring states. with the death penalty” (The Facts). How can this practice be justified? One of the most common offenses that can result in a death sentence is murder. So how does it make sense to kill someone for killing someone? The death penalty is not justice and is an embarrassment to the American justice system.
