Essay / The advantages and disadvantages of creationism - 1579
Evolution is a theory refuted by the majority of creationists; Creationists argue that evolution is simply a "theory" and is not supported by any scientific evidence. This argument is clearly false. For a scientific theory to be widely accepted by the majority of the scientific world, it must be supported by facts and evidence. In a recent Gallup poll, 55% of scientists, a majority, believed in evolution without divine intervention. An additional 40% of scientists believed in evolution with divine intervention; only 5% of scientists believe the earth was created by divine power within the last 10,000 years. However, public opinion is almost the opposite. 46% of respondents believe the Earth was created by divine power within the last 10,000 years; Furthermore, 40% of those questioned believe in evolution with divine intervention. Only 9% of those surveyed believed in evolution without divine help. The disparity between scientists and the public is too great to ignore; Despite the mostly scientific evidence, many people still do not fully support or believe in the theory of evolution. There is also a clear correlation between belief in evolution and belief in God. Although surveys attempting to record the religious beliefs of scientists are not always reliable, it is true that the percentage of scientists who believe in the divine is much lower than that of the general public. According to Eastern religions, such as Buddhism and Hinduism, these tensions between science and religion are only a Western problem, referring to the Abrahamic religions, Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Many people, including scientists, believe that the relationship between science and religion should not... middle of paper ... the earth and humans were not created less than 10,000 years ago years ; However, this does not mean that there was no divine intervention in the creation of the universe and the earth. This is the central point of my argument; the debate is not simply black and white, the gray area is where compromise can be found. Many argue that without divine intervention, there is no possible explanation for the creation of the universe; however, others argue that due to evolution, creationism is clearly false. These ideas, when combined, allow creationists to retain their belief that the universe was created by the divine, while allowing the introduction of modern science to explain evolution. The result is a successful resolution of the debate over evolution and creationism. Therefore, I believe that not only can evolution and creationism coexist, but also support each other..
