    In the short story “A Rose for Emily” written by William Faulkner, Emily, the protagonist, is presented as someone whose life is collapses and is brought down by society. Emily in this story could be described as a victim of society and her father. Emily Grierson's imprisonment, loss of her father and Homer, and constant criticism drove her crazy. Emily was kept confined to everything around her. Her father had given the townspeople a large sum of money, which made Emily and her father feel superior to others. “The Griersons held themselves a little too high for what they really were” (Faulkner). Emily's attitude had become that of an uptight and stubborn girl and her father was responsible for this attitude. Emily was a normal girl who longed to grow up and find a partner she could soon marry and start a family, but all of that was impossible because of her father.
