  • Essay / Cafeteria Food Essay - 804

In the same survey, conducted by the Institutional Review Board at the University of Minnesota, another student talked about the cost of cafeteria food. The student said, “It is important to me to get value for my money when choosing foods in the school cafeteria. I think the high-fat foods sold in the school cafeteria cost less than the low-fat foods. I would choose low-fat foods over high-fat foods in the cafeteria if low-fat foods cost less than high-fat foods” (quoted in Shannon). Many students already pay high tuition fees, so one might ask, "If I'm paying this much for tuition...why is food so expensive?" Or why not just go off campus to get cheaper foods that they would actually want to eat at a decent price. It's bad because the cafeteria might lose money or it's bad because the cafeteria encourages bad eating habits. At the Kingwood Lonestar Cafeteria, a small fruit cup costs $3.25 and a berry parfait costs $2.99. There is no nutritional data on the fruit cup or berry parfait, nor are there "ounces" shown on the fruit cup or berry parfait. So, if there are students who like to eat healthy and calculate what they digest each day, they wouldn't be able to do it in the Kingwood Lonestar cafeteria. It's bad because students don't know what they're consuming. Young people and their health are very important because it all determines what they will be like when they are older. “A healthy diet during adolescence helps young people reach their full growth potential, promote health and well-being, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood” (quoted in Shannon). According to Christine Shannon, because young people have a much higher rate of physical development, nutrient needs are very important.
