My academic writing training has remained, for the most part, completely uniform in terms of expectations and the basis for grading from my professors. Even though each assignment my teachers gave the class was different, the basic standard for the grading procedure was always the same; four to six sentences per paragraph, three paragraphs per article detailing in each paragraph a distinct element of the report, ending with a thesis paragraph. This assignment is very similar to those, except with an extra sentence or two added to each paragraph and a one-sentence thesis statement instead of a paragraph. Many of my assignments were very simple, for example I was simply asked to write an essay on a famous philosopher, probably to make it easier for the teacher to correct me. The standards between high school and college seem very similar, as I almost expected college to turn into a long series of theses and endless term papers. My previous class in ART 131 was particularly surprising, because I was expecting a long assignment of a dozen pages due by the end of the semester detailing the history of art. The longest assignment I had to write for any class was a three-month writing assignment detailing the Peloponnesian War for my sixth-grade history class, which included a cover page and a bibliography, completely new to me at the time. For this reason, most of my assignments, including for this course, are set at a higher level than most before word processing. Accompanying a higher degree of punctuation and spelling than previous generations, most assigned essays require detailed bibliographies and sources. The advent of computers has also improved this area, allowing many students to obtain hundreds of thousands of reliable pieces of information with a simple search on a search engine. It's almost a whirlwind of new grading standards over the past two decades that have reworked the mindset of students and teachers. Even though it's difficult, it's just the same level of difficulty that our old classmates had been working on, just a different way of writing. Most of the students I knew struggled to write essays that remained relevant without adding dozens of unnecessary sources to their bibliographies, and were unable to stay true to their theme. Being able to compose a clear, coherent message from a pile of data is a necessary skill to learn within our current service-side workforce.
