Essay / Kanye West: The Black Buck - 2016
From being known for creating hip-hop music, a fashion icon and establishing a foundation with his mother to being considered the most hated celebrity in the entertainment industry. Kanye West took it upon himself to stand up for himself when it came to winning Best Female Video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Taking the stage and grabbing the mic from country music star Taylor Swift and basically stating that she didn't deserve the title. The event left the audience and television lot well-stocked. What some may not realize is that Kanye West displayed multiple stereotypes that society might think African Americans possess. The stereotypes displayed were drunkenness, outspokenness, and a black man being a victim to a white man. By Kanye West displaying several black stereotypes in the MTV 2009 Video Music Awards television program, he is considered the modern-day "Black Buck". Kanye Omari West was born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in Chicago, Illinois by two parents who both had Doctor of Philosophy degrees. When he was three, his parents divorced, forcing him to move with his mother to Chicago. His father was a former Black Panther who was one of the first black photojournalists for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and later a Christian counselor. And his mother was a professor of English at Clark Atlanta University and chair of the English department at Chicago State University before retiring to become Kanye West's manager. Being raised by his mother and barely seeing his father, a stereotype that African Americans are unfortunately known for, is part of the reason why Kanye West is the way he is today (West). Another factor... middle of paper ... was Hurricane Katrina relief and the president felt like he wasn't doing his job well enough. Being the “Black Buck” today, most individuals would. think that would be a bad thing. We learned that being brutally honest, rebellious, and anti-racist are all traits of the term. After evaluating the actions and words of hip-hop artist Kanye West, he is undoubtedly considered the modern version of a “Black Buck”. Even though West has had prior events that made him feel like that term, MTV's 2009 Video Music Awards truly highlighted and certified that he is today's black rebel that we see on television. From drinking to being loud and outspoken to victimizing a young white girl, these displayed black stereotypes necessarily prove that West is the modern-day "Black Buck".”.
