Essay / Code of Ethics: What Makes You a Great Leader?
My code of ethics helps determine the type of decisions I make as a leader. When making decisions, not only does the code of ethics affect the type of decisions the leader will make, but also its impact on those in power. The definition of power is a person's ability to influence or exert control over others. (Nahavandi, 2015) There are two different ways to influence power on a leader: positive impact and negative impact. Positive impact focuses on action, where a leader is more sensitive and generous. The negative impact is a leader who cannot show empathy when a leader is addicted to power and taking all the credits. When a leader is positively influenced by power, he or she will be successful in making ethical decisions. For example, the leader will be able to obtain thoughtful information from peers and make a valid and reasonable decision while reporting to subordinates. When a leader is negatively affected by power, they abuse their power and make bad and unethical decisions. As a leader, leaders must avoid abusing their powers and maintain a positive impact on power.
