Computers have changed dramatically since their invention. Early computers were used for simple activities such as record keeping. Today, computers have gained many new uses. Computers are used in businesses, schools, homes, and many other places. Being trained in the use of computers can help job seekers get a better job and can also have many other benefits. Although the uses of computers vary greatly, it is certain that the need to educate people on how to use computers has increased significantly. One of the reasons why it is important to be trained in the use of computers is that those who are proficient are able to acquire jobs that provide higher income and jobs that may be easier. Having experience in IT is a skill highly sought after by many companies. According to a study by the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project, sixty-two percent of workers use a computer at work (Madden and Jones). These results indicate that more than half of the workforce uses computers in one way or another in their workplace. Most businesses depend on computers and the employees who work with them. Without computers, businesses would be inefficient. Since computers are a key factor in business success, employers take great care to seek out employees with computer skills. Some of the skills that employers want their employees to have are the ability to create websites, open and save files, create charts and graphs, and use word processing programs. Surveys have shown that computer knowledge ranks just below communication skills and analytical ability on the list of skills an employer looks for in a future employee (Hinders).
