  • Essay / Racial Profiling: The Importance of Racial Profiling

Racial Profiling Why does the color of my skin or appearance violate a boundary of comfort, or allow someone to examine me as a statistic ? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines racism as "a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and abilities, and that these racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race." Too many innocent people have been victims of racial profiling. First, when racial profiling becomes a normal expectation, we become accustomed to the usual “suspicious looks, inattentive employees or rude service – no handcuffs” when shopping in a store. (Jesse Washington). I have been racially profiled on numerous occasions. It's a really uncomfortable feeling to be in a restaurant, almost. Most store clerks and police officers believe this. Chan, “a graduate student,” as if having graduated gives him the right or qualifications to know when to profile someone, says, “Like it or not, I will have a preconceived notion of the races of my experiences. As much as I would like that and put everyone on a level playing field, stereotypes play a role in our society…”, Yes, they do. This doesn't mean that every crazy goth is going to do something crazy, or that every Arab you see is going to try to bomb the place. There are even cops who claim that racial profiling is effective. Jeffery Goldberg quoted Carl Williams in New York Time Magazine as saying, “Today with this drug problem, the drug problem is cocaine or marijuana. This is most likely a minority group involved in this,” he was fired. When it comes to drugs, what is a minority group? I've seen all kinds of people doing drugs, and I'm not a police officer. So one race is more into drugs than other races or is that the type of person? I don't assume that because there are African Americans selling drugs, or because he or she is Chinese, that they know karate. Sargent Mike Lewis says, "Ask me how many white people I've arrested for dealing cocaine - ask me!" He goes on to say, “None! Zero!" However, to determine what type of person a person is, you will have to actually talk to them and get to know them, not just perceive them as a serial killer, drug dealer, or martial artist because of their race .Crime has no race or should I say color Crime is crime and I think it's time we think about it..
