Essay / Sartre, like Heidegger, agrees that our own choices are what define us, and us alone. “Man is nothing other than that which makes him.” For Sartre, existence precedes essence. “First of all, man exists, appears, enters the scene and only then defines himself. » We define ourselves through the actions we choose to take. We are responsible for ourselves and the way we live in this world. “If existence really precedes essence, man is responsible for what he is. Thus, the first step of existentialism is to make each man conscious of what he is and to place on him the entire responsibility for his existence. Recognizing our freedom of choice and the responsibility we assume as beings is, according to Sartre, living an authentic life. However, Sartre notes that when we make our choices, we must realize that we are responsible not only for ourselves but also for all of humanity. “And when we say that a man is responsible for himself, we mean not only that he is responsible for his own individuality, but that he is responsible for all men.” The world around us is the product of our decisions and we must take responsibility for them too. When we realize this, they tend to feel overwhelmed and, in response, try to cover up these facts and lie to themselves.
