A person's systems constantly interact with each other trying to achieve and maintain homeostasis (Ashford and LeCroy, 2013). A person receives energy from systems called "input" and sends energy to the systems; this is called “outcome” (Ashford & LeCroy, 2013). Systems theory seeks to look beyond a specific “problem behavior” to try to determine the root cause of that behavior. The client is considered as their whole system in order to determine the cause (Ashford & LeCroy, 2013). Through reflection, I realized that I use systems theory daily when interacting with students as well as when discussing particular cases with my supervisor.
