It is essential to understand the revolution of the female silhouette throughout history by looking specifically at the corset "an underwear traditionally made of a fabric stiffened and tight to the body in order to refine a woman's waist » today and then and how the silhouette has changed. It was made of two layers of linen held tightly together with hardened glue. 16th-century corset makers later modified the corset-making process by introducing a thin piece of boning between two layers of corset material that resembled knitting needles. “The whalebone corset was much more confining than that reinforced with paste and was often worn in conjunction with other undergarments that further exaggerated the female form” (Woodward). Later, fashion saw a drastic change during the time of Queen Elizabeth where she favored "a long, firm corset reaching from the bust to below the natural waist, paired with a huge bone-reinforced hoop skirt of a whale called farthingale." Over time and fashion, the corset also changes depending on the event to choose whether it should be long or short, supporting the bust or minimizing it.
