The goal is to maintain the pregnancy until the fetal lungs are mature, usually around 34 weeks. Corticosteroids, such as betamethasone, may be given to the mother to promote fetal lung maturation if delivery is necessary. If the bleeding continues, endangering the lives of the mother and baby, delivery, by cesarean section, will take place regardless of gestational age. Caesarean section is performed in cases of partial or total placenta previa. For patients with a low placenta, they may be able to deliver vaginally depending on the amount of blood lost already.
