Stained glass artists capture not only artistic techniques, but also architectural methods to construct their works of art. These techniques have existed for thousands of years and have survived across many cultures. Colors, patterns, and scenes evoke an emotional response in the viewer and represent a visual interpretation of a story, scripture, or moment in time. In order to completely understand the scope of the art and architecture of a stained glass window, an individual must first know the origin of a stained glass window. “Egyptian or Mesopotamian potters accidentally discovered glass while firing their vessels. The earliest known man-made glass comes in the form of Egyptian beads dating between 2750 and 2625 BC. (Gross, Par 5) Today, the majority of people in the world cannot understand where a single pane of glass comes from or cannot visualize an existence without these fragile sheets of glass. However, windows did not appear until a few thousand years ago, and stained glass did not emerge until several years after ordinary window panes were created. “The first stained glass windows were purely ornamental transparent mosaics. » (Coleman, Par. 3) Stained glass windows are traditionally instituted in Catholic churches and cathedrals, but they can also be found in a variety of other locations. In the modern era, an individual can get a stained glass window for their home, business, or any other establishment in which they wish to place a window. The color range of a stained glass window, however, varies depending on the image created. in the mind of the artist as well as recovering an emotional reflection in the viewer.
