  • Essay / The Evolution of Public Administration in the United States...

Public administration as a field of study and as a practice has continually evolved with American society. The United States has survived and thrived despite major cultural changes, changing economic climates, and civil and world wars. Despite all of these changes in our country, one thing has always remained the same: the fact that we are an ever-changing and evolving nation. Theories and forms of practice of public administration have also evolved alongside United States history. Many events in American history have led to changes in society, and the practice of public administration has both led and followed the process of adapting to these monumental changes. Public administration officially became a recognized academic and professional field in the late 19th century. Many public administration scholars claim that the beginning of public administration's transformation into a field of study was the 1887 Political Science Quarterly article "The Study of Administration" by a young Woodrow Wilson. (Shafritz, Russell, and Borick, 2011, p. 28) Woodrow Wilson has been classified as a member of the progressive movement. Progressives were a diverse group of politicians, academics, advocates, and activists who sought to abolish what they saw as the corrupt practices of the patronage system and to reform the new industrialized society that America had become. They opposed widespread government corruption and sought to eliminate the political machines that had become the norm of the time. The study of public administration has only grown over the next two decades. As the study of public administration grew, so did the development of the paper industry. The ice of public administration will continue to change with the progress of society. There are already many questions that tomorrow's public administrators will face. These questions will be varied and complex and will concern the continued development of computers, possible advances in health care and science, and even major social and legislative changes.
