  • Essay / Delight in your child's design by Laurie Winslow Sargent

Mrs. Sargent mentioned that a child's strongest traits are often the ones their parents are trying to rein in. In this chapter Ms. Sargent provides a list of the ABCs of Temperament, this is a list of all the different personality types arranged alphabetically. From there, she encourages the reader to choose the first temperaments that match their child. These are their strongest innate traits! These traits will influence this child throughout their life; 1) how he interacts with others, 2) how he handles problems, 3) how he accomplishes his tasks, and 4) what excites and motivates him. Ms. Sargent said, "Becoming familiar with your child's personality will go a long way in helping you understand why your child acts the way he or she does," and I believe this is one of the most important statements in the book. She also warns against stereotyping a child based on their personality traits: no two people are the same as another. When her children were young, she read them a book called The Treasure Tree. In this book, the four characters all had different temperaments that were known. These temperaments presented were the same personality types that Hippocrates laid the foundation for several hundred years ago; Choleric, sanguine, melancholic and phlegmatic. From there, there is a quiz that helps identify which personality type best matches a child. But she also explains that people will never completely fit into one type. It is extremely likely that it will fall into two or three categories, with one of them potentially outperforming the others. The very personalities we possess have a greater influence on the life we live than our intellectual personality.
