  • Essay / The Legend of King Arthur - 599

Who was the real King Arthur? King Arthur didn't grow up like a normal king would. He was raised in a very strange way, but with the help of Merlin, an extraordinary wizard, Arthur became king as was his destiny. Queen Igrane of England bore King Uther a son. This child was to one day inherit the throne. King Uther summoned Merlin, a clairvoyant prophet and powerful magician. Merlin had to provide a vital service to the kingdom. Merlin agreed to the condition that the king would grant him whatever he asked. King Uther was reluctant to such a deal because what Merlin wanted was the young prince. However, Merlin assured the king that he could see into the future and that the arrangement would benefit the prince. Therefore, once the prince was born, Merlin took him away. The magician took the child to Sir Ector. Sir Ector and his wife called a priest who baptized the child. The couple decided to name the child Arthur and they loved him as much as they loved their own son Kay. Two years after Arthur's birth, King Uther fell ill and died. The kingdom fell into a state of disarray as the king had left no heir apparent. Merlin knew he had to reveal Arthur's identity but it wasn't the right time yet. Meanwhile, Merlin mentored Arthur, teaching him how to swing, ride a horse, shoot a bow, and speak to animals in their own language. Years passed and Merlin decided it was time for the kingdom to discover its rightful king. Merlin went to the Archbishop of Canterbury and advised him to gather all the great lords to London for the next Christmas celebration. There, at St. Paul's Cathedral, a miracle would occur and reveal the identity of the rightful king.
