  • Essay / Escaping Life with My Dad and Stepmom - 960

It was a hot summer day at the end of August. From a distance, mirages of water outlined the horizon under the heat of the black concrete road. the farmers' fields glowed bright green with tall corn stalks lined up perfectly on both sides of the road. Beyond the field in the distance, vultures flew over a house I had once lived in and a house that imprisoned my soul. One of the most vile people I have ever met still calls this house home. My father moved there and spent his whole life there. Causing misery to any soul that decides to fight their way to his door. I still feel empathy today for anyone who has to be in his presence. he's a monster that I wish didn't exist and he's the main reason I had to escape. Around 4 p.m., before I even knew I was going to escape. School had just let out and I finally arrived at my father's house, where I was living at the time. As I walked to the front porch of the house, I saw a cardboard box the size of a cinder block sitting between the front door and the screen door. I searched the package for the sender's address but there was none, I was anticipating the arrival of a package from my mother, I assumed it was mine so I collected the box and took it home. I announced that I was home but received no response. I searched the house and no one was home. “I guess everyone is still at work,” I said to myself. I decided to open the package. I was really excited because I hadn't heard from my mom in a long time. I was not allowed to contact her. My father had this rule set in stone. I know now that it was more likely to keep him out of trouble for the things he had done. I grabbed a box cutter from the toolbox my dad kept under the sink, placed it in the middle of the paper... then asked "Is there anyone who could keep you safe away from your father, somewhere you could live?' I said "my mother would do it in a heartbeat". she left for a few minutes and came back and informed me "that my mother was on her way to pick me up and that I was most likely going to live with my mother for good. I was very ecstatic and couldn't believe". how well things were going. My mother came to pick me up, the principal bid us farewell I jumped in my mother's car and started driving. cornfields on that hot summer road I took one last look out the back window, watching the vultures circling around the nightmare I had just experienced. “It’s the best thing that could happen to me!” I said to myself "This will be the most memorable day of my life"."
