This unfortunately hit Thomas with sadness and depression. Yet Thomas continued to live the life he knew he could live. When his father died, Thomas inherited twenty slaves, but treated them very well. Thomas loved reading biographies. He always loved learning about the people in history who made a difference in the life he lived during that time. Thomas grew up intelligent and loved education. As an adult, Thomas inherits his father's estate. Three years later he married Martha Wayles Skelton. Thomas loved his wife very much and the life he led with her. Martha died about ten years after marrying Thomas. During their happy marriage together, they had 6 children, only two of whom survived to adulthood. A few years later he built an estate called Monticello. He lived in this area for most of his adult life and presidency.
