According to the Clarion University Code of Conduct, plagiarism is "the use of another's words without attribution and without placing the words in quotation marks." Plagiarism can also be defined as the act of taking another person's ideas or expressions of ideas and representing them as one's own, even if the original article has been paraphrased or otherwise altered. (“Nursing Department”) Many people, including myself, don't know what plagiarism actually means. Through my research, I discovered that there are many types of plagiarism and that many people do it without even being aware of it. I made the mistake of thinking you could use another person's quote as long as it was cited. However, this is wrong because it is plagiarism and is a very serious issue to deal with. Personally, I thought using quotes was okay because I didn't understand the difference between the two, but it's considered stealing. ("What is plagiarism?") According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, the meaning of plagiarism is "to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of others) as one's own." ("What is plagiarism?") During my research, I discovered five main types of plagiarism that I certainly wasn't aware of before. The first is “copy and paste plagiarism”. (Liles, J) I think this plagiarism is more obvious than other types because it directly takes someone else's quote and inserts it into your article without even rearranging it. If you decide to use a direct quote, you should always include quotation marks and reference the source you are using.
