Essay / Career Analysis: Aerospace Engineering - 1051
Aerospace engineering is a very difficult field to master. This field of engineering focuses on “the design, development, construction, testing and operation of vehicles in the Earth's atmosphere or in space” (Britannica.com). Engineers often work in “specialty teams” that work on specific parts of a project. For example, teams could work on “aerodynamics, propulsion systems, structural design, materials, avionics, and stability and control systems” (Britannica.com). many engineers may “specialize” in a certain “aerospace product” such as commercial aircraft, military fighter jets, helicopters, spacecraft, and missiles or rockets (Bls.gov). Many engineers are employed by companies that contract for the Department of Defense. Aerospace engineering began with the Wright brothers, “the fathers of modern human flight” (Britannica.com). World War I was the first aviation boom. The aircraft were “designed and built for specific military missions” (Britannica.com). After the war, aircraft shifted from military air transport to civilian air transport. The 1920s and 1930s saw many advances in aircraft design, engines, and metallurgy. The introduction of the monoplane was a very important advance. The first "all-metal monoplane" was designed and built in 1910, but was not accepted until 1933 (Britannica.com). Clarence L. “Kelly” Johnson was an aerospace engineer and “aviation legend” (Wvi.com). Johnson's accomplishments have been tremendous. “He played a leading role in the design of 40 world-famous aircraft” (Wvi.com). More than half of the creations were his own. He became the “vice president of advanced development projects” (ADP) or “skunk works” (Wvi.com). Johnson's "skunk works" team (Wvi.com) has designed some of the most advanced materials...... middle of paper...... Works Cited "Aerospace Engineering". Encyclopedia Britannica.
