  • Essay / Compare and Contrast The Other Wes Moore - 1336

The Other Wes Moore is a book about two children who share more than one might expect. They have the same name, they grew up in the same neighborhood, they both had difficult childhoods and they both grew up without a father, the list goes on. They may have been the same in many ways, but they grew up completely different. One day the author was reading the newspaper that featured him and came across an article about a planned jewelry store robbery gone wrong. This article featured someone named Wes Moore. Author Wes Moore decided to write about the man who is currently serving a life sentence in prison. The author thought he would never get a response, but he did. Since then, they have remained connected and are very good friends. Throughout the book The Other Wes Moore, the author Wes does an excellent job. So how have they become different? It's true that both Wes Moores grew up without fathers, but the way they lost their fathers was completely different. The author, Wes Moore, lost his father to a tragic, preventable death. While Wes Moore's father, incarcerated, was never in his life. How they lost their father isn't the only thing that played a role in the Moores' different developments. The quality traits posed by their fathers also played a role. The two fathers had different qualities. The author's father was strong, independent, protective, non-violent, and the list goes on. On the other hand, Wes' incarcerated father was a drunk. So, does it really matter how the father is absent? I believe so. Would you rather know what happened to your father or have to face the fact that your father never wanted to be in your life. After losing their father, both Moores set out on a path of destruction. But it was family and the memory of his father that guided author Wes Moore in a different direction.
