Essay / A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams,
In the play A Streetcar Named Desire, written by Tennessee Williams, we see two different personalities in the main characters of two sisters, Blanche DuBois and Stella Kowalski. Blanche is a more mature woman with an old-fashioned style. Meanwhile, Stella is an understanding, strong-willed and protective woman in the heart of downtown New Orleans. The play is set in the 1950s and takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana. Blanche plans to go visit her sister Stella in town. Blanche was an English teacher from Belle Reve, a plantation home. She has not yet realized how much her sister has changed and how much of an animal Stanley, Stella's husband, has become. From the beginning of the play, Blanche appears as a mature and responsible woman, without problems. As the play continues, the sisters both have secrets they hide, raw emotions that reveal their character, and different realities that set them apart from each other. Stella seems like the perfect sister. Patience and compassion were offered to him. She will listen to everyone and lend a helping hand whenever and wherever help is needed. Stella's ability to understand Blanche's problems and feelings could earn her an appointment as a saint. Blanche has just arrived at Stella's house and she tells how she met Stanley. Stella explains that Stanley travels a lot and is away for weeks: “When he's gone for a week, I almost go crazy! Gracious!.....I guess that's what it means to be in love” (Williams23). Blanche tells Stella about Belle Reve, the plantation where they grew up. She says they lost him because of personal issues with their father and uncle. While facing this news, Stella remains calm and understands... middle of paper... already at the stage of humanity! (Williams72). Stella's emotional state is pushed to the extreme in this passage. Blanche attacks Stanley right in front of Stella and she does nothing to defend her husband. Stella is the most mature. Blanche is the one who behaves like a teenager. Blanche and Stella don't have many similarities, but in the end they are very different. Blanche is irritating, disrespectful and has no manners or respect for her sister and Stanley. In the last scene of the play, Blanche is sent to an insane asylum with the escort of her doctor. Stella and Stanley were the ones who requested that Blanche be removed from society. Stellas love for Blanche pushed her to call for help to save her sister. The result of Blanche's lies is that she got what she deserved and is put in her place..
