From this Protestant Reformation, the practice of Protestantism emerged and a division with the Catholic Church was now successful. Martin Luther has been called “one of the most influential figures in Western history” (“Martin Luther and the 95 Theses,” 2009) for his major reforms against the Church that led to historic division. The invention of printing can also be attributed to this rapid spread and division. In history class during my first year, we learned about the impact of printing throughout Europe at the time of its invention. Religious texts were now interpreted into the vernacular and printed, making them affordable and readable for the ordinary citizen. This is also the case for the 95 theses. The document was translated and distributed throughout Germany and Europe, and became accessible to ordinary citizens as well as members of the Church elite. Before, the Church and those who read in Latin could interpret a document, saying what they wanted others who could not read to hear. Citizens could simply take their word for it, having no way of proving whether it was an accurate statement.
