Essay / The Crucible - 954
"'A person is either with this tribunal or must be counted against it, there is no road between.'" Act 3, scene 1 p. 87. The characters in the play are portrayed as good or bad, with no in-between, which makes their lives even more difficult. Salem falsely characterized the townspeople as good or bad, but they had little to no evidence to support this. Salem calls Nurse Rebecca a witch and evil, when in reality she was innocent and took care of everyone's babies. Abigail was an evil character who was a liar, vindictive and careless, the people of Salem considered her a good character. In the play, Rebecca Nurse was the babysitter of Mrs. Putnam's babies, when the babies died of illness or other reasons. For not being treated this was blamed on Rebecca Nurse. Rebecca Nurse has given birth to many children without problems. When Ann Putnam gave birth to her babies, many deaths aroused Rebecca Nurse's envy, leading to her getting arrested. Parris [trembling] Rebecca, Rebecca, go to her, we are lost. She suddenly can't stand to hear the Lord any more." (Page 31). At the start of Act 1, Betty is lying in bed, supposedly sick, she can't get up and her father Parris begins to lose hope In the play Rebecca The nurse is depicted as a strong figure, she does her best to help the sick with great intentions. Usually, she was the one who would help Proctor: (I think so solemnly) Rebecca: ( I don't like the smell of this "authority") Rebecca: No, you can't break charity with your minister You're another kind of nice John shook his hand, make your peace (31) ". Proctor, Rebecca Nurse and Parris have a discussion, Parris tries to warn Proctor that there is a battle going on between the go...... middle of paper ...... or they probably didn't not. but this caused much chaos and executions. Rebecca Nurse was one of the characters claimed to be evil, when in reality she was basically innocent and had nothing to do with the murder of the babies in her care. Abigail was also wrongly characterized as a good character when in reality she was a big liar and uncaring about anything that happened in the story. Finally, Marry Warren was a good character, she liked a little power here and there but she did what was right, but that obviously didn't get her anywhere. So, to save her from being executed, she started lying. In the play, being the opposite of good was the way to go, being innocent and remaining drama-free would get you nowhere but executed. Everything was upside down, the concept was wrong and there was no evidence to prove the witchcraft trials. .
