Essay / Recommendations for Welfare Policy and Government Assistance
Recommendations for Welfare Policy and Government Assistance Having grown up in a lower-class single-parent family, I personally realize the need for welfare programs social and government assistance. I also realize that the system is very complex and can become a crutch for people who become dependent and complacent. As a liberal American, I believe the government should provide services to the less fortunate and resources to enable them to find work. However, as able-bodied citizens, we should not just collect benefits and it is the government's duty to identify people who are taking advantage of the system and remove benefits from those who are not making an effort to support themselves. to their needs independently. I will identify errors that exist within the welfare system and several policy recommendations to implement change that will counteract the negative conditions that currently exist. I have concluded that there are five major problems with our U.S. government aid system. First, the social protection system is too generous. The article bears witness to this as it states that government aid spending has more than doubled since 2008. It also states that in poor countries, people have only the choice to work or starve. They choose to work long hours and we choose not to work and receive benefits. There is certainly a problem with our support system if a single mother can receive more money in benefits than a working secretary. Second, the welfare system becomes a crutch and acts as a government safety net. This creates idleness and comfort among people who would rather receive generous benefits than work. Three or a third of people declaring themselves disabled are actually capable of working. Fourth, states are very different... middle of document ......the Canadian welfare system has many flaws and I have identified major problems and possible policy solutions/recommendations. We cannot completely ignore government assistance, as we are a country of equality for all and should be proud to have services that help those less fortunate. However, it is necessary to identify those who abuse and those who become too comfortable. We cannot continue to fall further into debt by supporting people who make no effort to provide for themselves. Nevertheless, we must help and assist those who are constantly striving to become educated, competent and experienced enough to become self-reliant. I will end with a quote from the article about welfare helping a woman survive while studying. Currently, she has a diploma and a job as a manager. “I had clear goals,” “I wasn’t raised to stay home waiting for a check to arrive in the mail".”
