  • Essay / Critical analysis of Zeilinger's book, The High Cost of...

Zeilinger believes that women are not the only ones who suffer from oppressive gender roles. Men often suffer just as much, if not more. It seeks to expose the problems that men face in today's society. Guys have emotions, and when they come, they have to face a big dilemma. They can either disconnect from their human emotions or live in a “state of contradiction” in relation to their “manliness”. The traits that traditionally characterize being a man are detrimental to society. They are expected to be “cunning and take power and control instead of sharing it.” Men must be willing to pick on weaker men in order to be above them. Zeilinger highlights the harmful effects of this dominant mentality. Men are afraid to deviate from the strict rules of manhood. If men go against common norms, they risk losing their identity as men. Those who choose not to follow these social norms are seen as a threat by those who cling to them. Gay men, for example, often choose to deviate from these norms. Zeilinger discusses the story of a gay friend who must overcome “male and female stigmas.” He often feels out of place because he does not fit into the realm of masculine or feminine roles. Zeilinger ends his article by calling for change among men and women to create a healthier world.
