  • Essay / The Teacher's Main Goal of Using Literature in the Classroom

“Literature provides wonderful raw material for eliciting strong emotional responses from our students” (Lazar, 1993: 3). Using literature in the language classroom is a way of allowing learners to engage as whole people and provides them with many opportunities where they can express their feelings, personal opinions and reactions. Furthermore, Kramsch (1993) argues that the teaching of literature reveals "its capacity to represent the particular voice of a writer among the many voices of his community and thus to appeal to the particularity of the reader" (pp. 130- 131 cited in Carroli, 2008: 8). However, because teachers use literature as an authentic text, learners immediately show interest because it is not an ordinary reading text found in the textbook. Thus, higher level students can easily become absorbed in the plot and characters, and thus acquire the new language in its best form. “Literature then becomes an important means of supplementing the inevitably limited contribution of the class” (Lazar, 1993: 17). Therefore, learners benefit from such authentic text, especially in linguistic areas such as grammar, syntax and vocabulary. In addition, students will be encouraged to delve deeper into political, historical and social aspects. These aspects will constitute the cultural context of a particular play or novel. In addition to this, learners will have the opportunity to exchange their opinions and ideas on a poem, a novel or a play. In the beginning, it is best for the learner to understand the language in order to appreciate the literature. Students should also be able to let teachers help them with the most interesting elements of the text. Nevertheless, the main objective......in the middle of the article......ed is to consider how long their text should be, whether it is going to be long or short and the availability of the texts or books. Therefore, they must determine whether these texts fit the curriculum and what different types of texts will be needed to exploit the given text. However, in order to find out what their learners are interested in, teachers use different ways to collect data from their learners. A common way to collect data is to survey or interview students. Another way to collect data is to use a checklist. Using checklists, teachers can remove or add any criteria they deem important or less important throughout their research. However, there are many things teachers need to consider when teaching literature in this language. Therefore, if they are well prepared, any discipline in the language class will be avoided..
